Students are all class for Anzac

BY JARROD McALEESE

STUDENTS from Alkira Secondary College and Hillsmeade Primary School came together for their annual Anzac commemorative ceremony, the fifth running of the event.
Guests included City of Casey mayor Sam Aziz, Dandenong Cranbourne RSL Sub-branch senior vice-president Bill Shepherd and John Boothroyd of the Royal Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers Association of Victoria who spoke during the ceremony.
Year 9 students from Alkira co-ordinated and presented at the Hillsmeade Primary School event with the schools’ captains giving speeches and fellow student Shaylee Hearn writing and reciting her own poem at the service.
Alkira teacher Nicole Scott said the event enabled the schools to unite and educate all students on the significance of the occasion.
“For us it is not only to give other students the experience of an Anzac Day event but also to honour the bonds between our two schools.
“The students are given a greater understanding of the importance of the event,” Ms Scott said.
