THREE lines of red oaks will soon bring a blaze of colour to Heatherton Road, Endeavour Hills.
Planting of the bright red-leaved deciduous trees on the median strip and both sides of the road opposite Endeavour Hills shopping centre was expected to begin on 12 July as part of a $500,000 Casey Council project.
Casey councillor Rafal Kaplon, who initiated the Heatherton Road Boulevard idea, said he firstly wanted to create an ‘avenue of honour’.
The idea broadened to include dedicating the trees to outstanding servants of the community, CFA and police.
“Once the trees are established and reach full maturity, they will create an amazing free canopy along Heatherton Road, similar to that found in many inner city roads,” Cr Kaplon said.
“This will not only improve the image of Endeavour Hills, increase community pride but also increase the quality of life in the area and raise home values.”
The result would help restore pride in the community, he said.
“This project is a necessity to restore the image of Endeavour Hills which is now over 40 years old and restore a sense of community spirit that has been affected by the sad events that had occurred in the area over the last two years.
“It will greatly improve the image of Heatherton Road, which has been the subject of many complaints from residents due to its neglected state by VicRoads for many years.”
With the blessing of VicRoads, Casey will fund and undertake the project, which includes installing flagpoles at the corner of Heatherton Road and Mossgiel Park Drive.
