Fold the front page – it’s a hemline headline

A TIERED, ground-skimming skirt made from pleated pages of the Berwick News turned headed at a VIP fashion event in Berwick Village on Friday night.
The frock was the creation of Mayda Apoyan, owner of Zealous on High Hair Beauty and Make-up.
Mayda, with the help of her staff, created the inky masterpiece in between clients in the days leading up to the event.
Her original idea was to use magazine paper but she quickly found it was too stiff.
“I wanted to create something that was quite out there,” she said.
“Something avant-garde and newspaper was the cheapest way out. But it turned out to be heavy, really heavy.“
The skirt was modelled by Zealous on High hairdresser Emily Firth.
“It was quite comfortable to wear,” said Emily.
“It wasn’t heavy, or scratching or anything like that. I was walking up and down Berwick Main Street the whole evening. It was really sturdy.
“Lots of people were stopping me wanting to take photographs.”
Emily’s friend, Chelsea Sebek, modelled a similarly spectacular Mayda creation.
Mayda plans on completing the newspaper dress by adding a bodice and train.
“I love to get it (creativity) out of my system. I’m very dangerous that way,” she said, laughing.
