MOUNTAIN bike riders have pitched in to fix the extensive trail network in Lysterfield Park.
Jumps and water drainage have been improved, gravel laid down and erosion fixed as part of the works.
The works were undertaken by Parks Victoria and Lysterfield District Trail Riders (LDTR).
LDTR fund-raised and offered thousands of hours of volunteering towards the project.
The area’s chief ranger Darren Mitchell said the riders had been regular contributors, such as through monthly working bees.
“It’s not unusual for around 10 (or) 12 volunteers to turn up to help maintain and upgrade the park.
“They’re a fantastic group.”
LDTR president Ben Reeves said he was partly motivated by giving back to the community and partly “wanting a better ride next time I go out”.
“We’re incredibly lucky to have a natural oasis so close to the city.”
The park’s 20 kilometres of mountain bike trails includes the State Mountain Bike Course used in the 2006 Commonwealth Games, as well as tracks for various skill levels.
