A 26-year-old man was “ambushed” when he was fatally shot in the driveway of a Narre Warren house on 16 August.
Detective Inspector Mick Hughes, of Victoria Police’s Homicide Squad, said there was “no apparent reason” for the interstate man’s death at this stage.
The man had been socially visiting a friend, who lived with his parents at the Kurrajong Road address, Insp Hughes said.
“We’re confident from a community safety perspective that this was a targeted attack.
“The victim has got out of his car. He’s walked down the driveway and as soon as he’s got to the front door someone has ambushed him.”
Emergency crews had been called about 7.30pm. Despite paramedics performing CPR, the man died at the scene.
Several bullets were fired during the shooting. There was, as yet, no indication that it was a drive-by shooting.
Insp Hughes did not rule out a case of mistaken identity, but the attack seemed “very specific”.
“The residents (at the house) are co-operating with police. They are very helpful,” Insp Hughes said.
“I know he’d been in contact with the occupants that afternoon and they made arrangements for him to come over to the house.”
Police are seeking neighbours’ CCTV footage and any other information to help with the case.
