National Union of Workers state secretary Gary Maas has been endorsed as Labor’s candidate for Narre Warren South in the 2018 state election.
Mr Maas’s platform includes jobs, housing, fairer communities and working with union members.
“For many of our members, a secure job and an affordable home feel out of reach.
“In making the decision to stand as a Labor candidate, I will be able to continue to work with union members, and continue to live the values that the labour movement has brought to me.”
Mr Maas grew up in Springvale, describing himself as the Australian-born son of Sri Lankan migrants.
“My parents’ journey, like the journey of so many like them, was made to pursue opportunities for themselves and their children that they could not find in their homeland.
“The hopes and aspirations of people have not changed since I was growing up, but the opportunities have, with school closures, funding cuts and attacks on workers from state and federal Liberal Governments.”
Narre Warren South MP for 12 years Judith Couacaud Graley announced her resignation in August, effective at next year’s state election.
