RSPCA shelters are attempting to make room for the anticipated summertime explosion in homeless kittens.
The organisation is dropping cat adoption fees from $120 to $39 in a bid to re-home 200 cats in four days.
The cats – over four months old – are desexed, microchipped, vaccinated and have had veterinary checks.
Chief executive Dr Liz Walker said cats as young as five months had little difficulty conceiving and giving birth in the warm season.
“Nearly every un-desexed female cat who is exposed to an un-desexed male during the warmer months will become pregnant.
“We really want to emphasise that the relatively low cost of desexing far outweighs the cost to the community of caring for cats and kittens.”
In 2016-’17, more than 4000 kittens arrived in RSPCA shelters. Most landed between November and April.
“We need to break this cycle of homelessness that so many of these beautiful creatures experience,” Dr Walker said.
“Desexing is the most effective strategy.”
