Family violence minister to meet with Casey Council

State member for Narre Warren South Judith Couacaud Graley MP has asked the minister for the prevention of family violence to meet with Casey Council to discuss what can be done locally to address family violence.

The City of Casey has reported the highest number of family violence incidents in Victoria for the past six years, with over 4700 incidents reported in Casey last year.

In 2016, the Royal Commission into family violence made 227 recommendations to deal with family violence, 90 have already been implemented by the Andrews Labor Government.

The report recommended the state government examine how local council performance measures can be used to encourage the prevention and response to family violence.

Ms Graley also spoke in support of the Prevention of Family Violence Bill 2018 that will establish a new family violence prevention agency Respect Victoria.

“Though we have taken great strides in creating a system that supports and protects victims of family violence, we still have a long way to go,” Ms Couacaud Graley said.

“We need a united approach from all levels of government working with local agencies and community groups to reduce family violence levels in the Casey area.”
