Shoppers evacuate in Berwick

Shoppers at Woolworths in Berwick were told to evacuate at 8am this morning, 24 August after smoke was discovered emanating from some equipment in the plant room.

Around six customers were evacuated along with a number of team members. None of them were injured or harmed.

There is no evidence at this stage that fire broke out in the plant room.

“The safety of customers and team members is always our number one priority,” a Woolworth’s spokesperson said.

“Our Berwick team did the right thing and acted quickly to evacuate the store in line with our established safety procedures.

“The store has ceased trading until further notice and local customers are welcome to visit our Beaconsfield and Fountain Gate stores in the interim.

“We’re closely assisting authorities with investigations into the cause of the incident.”
