Bunjil Place’s First Birthday went off with a bang, with more than 4500 people turning out to Casey’s home of arts and entertainment to join in the celebrations on Sunday, 28 October.
City of Casey Mayor at the time, Cr Geoff Ablett said the birthday party reflected what Bunjil Place is all about.
“In its first 12 months, Bunjil Place has been delivering good times for people of all ages and the first birthday celebration was no exception,” he said.
“The Listies make you LOL show was a huge hit with families in the theatre, and the By A Thread performance in the Studio had people on the edge of their seats with their amazing acrobatics.
“With the sun shining, many families kicked back on beanbags, deck chairs or picnics rugs and soaked up the atmosphere in the plaza with food trucks, live music, roving entertainers, the popular Glam Station, party decoration workshops and of course, free birthday cupcakes.”
“The day was capped off by the Casey Cares Mayoral Charity Concert, organised by Cr Wayne Smith, to raise money to support Gippsland Farmer Relief.”
Speaking at the event, Cr Ablett reflected on the first year of Bunjil Place.
“Since its opening in October 2017, Bunjil Place has drawn in over 1.46 million people from the community and beyond,” he said.
“There have been 41 national touring acts that have put on 67 performances, attracting over 26,000 people and generating over $2 million in ticket sales.
“We have hosted a huge variety of international, national and local level performances in our theatre and studio, plus many family favourites including Opera Australia, The Australian Ballet, Bell Shakespeare, The Very Hungry Caterpillar and We Will Rock You.”
Cr Ablett said the gallery has presented five major exhibitions and held three visual arts exhibitions that have attracted over 58,000 visitors.
“The state-of-the-art library has received over 40,000 visitors per month, membership has increased significantly, and visitors have enjoyed a diverse range of programming, including the ever-popular story times,” he said.
“The plaza has been brought to life with a variety of activities and events for all ages, including musical performances, live theatre acts, art activities, markets, festivals and movies, which have all been enjoyed by thousands.
“Council is so proud of the way the community has embraced Bunjil Place since it opened its doors and it was wonderful to see so many people turn out to join in the first birthday celebrations.”
