Rebuilding lives for the homeless

Hampton Park’s Korey Abrahams has recently set up a project called ‘Taken for Granted’, a foundation to offer support to those suffering through tough times, such as homelessness.

Mr Abrahams works in Dandenong and often sees people begging for money and always feels the need to help out.

“On this particular day the response I got from this man who I simply gave around $10 and some coins to was amazing. He was so grateful for such a small donation,” he said.

“It looked like I had just saved his life and that inspired me to start this movement.

“As someone who has been through my own hard time with finances I may not have been homeless but have felt the disadvantages of having no money, I feel it is important to help those in need if you have the power to do so.”

Mr Abrahams and his team have received almost $600 in donations since starting but are still long way from their target of $5000.

“Our goal is to use all the proceeds to make care packages that can go to the people in need, filled with things they can really use such as clothing, bottled water, basic toiletries as well as can foods that they can store and pop up tents,” Mr Abrahams said.

“We know many people have a sceptical opinion on giving money or goods to homeless people thinking they will use or sell the items to feed an addiction.

Mr Abrahams said, “But as the old saying says don’t judge a book by its cover. We don’t know the stories behind the person we see in front of us.

“But we as a community can put some positive vibes into the world also showing a better way for generations who come after us or even if we spark the change in one person’s life I’ll be happy.”
