A man in his 40’s was flown to hospital after a two-car collision at Inglis Road Berwick, left one car upside down and a ute on its side just after 3pm on Saturday afternoon.
The crash was one of five in a horror three-hour period on the states roads that claimed the lives of four people.
The Pakenham Road Rescue Unit (PRRU) was called to rescue the driver of the ute while the driver of the upside-down car was able to get out of the vehicle before emergency services arrived.
Arriving on scene Pakenham SES and Nar Nar Goon CFA volunteers found not only had the ute ended up on its side but the roof had caved in to almost chest height of the driver, making his extraction a difficult one.
Rescuers used hydraulic tools to remove the roof with the car on its side before assisting paramedics to free the driver from the wreckage who was flown to hospital by air ambulance.
Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
