Byrne claims win

Labor MP Anthony Byrne says he is honoured to be re-elected after claiming victory for the seat of Holt in the Federal Election on Saturday 18 May.

“I wish to thank the voters of Holt for electing me as their representative again. It is an immense honour to continue to represent this wonderful diverse and vibrant community,” Mr Byrne said.

“Congratulations to the Liberal Candidate Jennifer Van Den Broek and the other candidates on their campaigns in Holt.”

With more than 69 per cent of votes counted, Mr Bryne had polled 41,917 votes, giving him a 59.36 per cent hold of the two-party preferred votes – ahead of Ms Van Den Broek with 40.64 per cent.

Mr Byrne said although it was a disappointing outcome for the Labor party – “the voters of Australia have spoken with a loud clear voice.”

“The Federal Labor Party must listen to the Australian people and learn lessons from this result.

“As the re-elected Labor Member for Holt I will continue to work closely with our community to work on issues such as national security, delivering much needed infrastructure for Holt, and delivering extra funding for our local schools, hospitals, and vital Government services,” he said.

Mr Byrne added: “I wish to congratulate Prime Minister Scott Morrison on his election victory.”

“I am extremely proud of our local campaign in Holt. I wish to thank my staff and volunteers for their efforts during this campaign. Without their support this result would not have been possible.”

Ms Van Den Broek has been contacted for comment.
