Victoria’s coronavirus cases climbs above 1000

The total number of coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in Victoria is 1036 ­– an increase of 68 from yesterday (1 April).

On Wednesday 1 April a woman in her seventies died in hospital, taking the number of people who have died in Victoria from coronavirus to five.

The total number of cases includes 551 men and 480 women. Cases range in age from babies to their early nineties.

There are 57 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Victoria that may have been acquired through community transmission. More than 49,000 tests have been conducted to date.

As of 31 March, the number of confirmed coronaviruses in Casey stood at 28; Dandenong (nine cases); and Cardinia (seven cases).Currently 36 people are in hospital – including six patients in intensive care – and 422 people have recovered.

In the past 24 hours, Victoria Police has conducted 1084 spot checks at homes, businesses and non-essential services across the state as part of Operation Sentinel.

Thirteen fines have been issued – with the total tally of fines reaching 23.Since 21 March, police have conducted a total of 10,292 spot checks
