Covid curve slows

No new cases of Covid-19 have been reported in the City of Casey in the past week – the number has continued to remain at 53 for the past eight days.

The Victoria’s Department of Health and Human Services figures showed the total number of coronavirus cases in Victoria stood at 1349.

In other parts of the southeast, cases in Greater Dandenong remained steady with 14 confirmed cases and 13 in Cardinia.

There were no new deaths reported yesterday (26 April). To date, 17 people have died from coronavirus in Victoria.

The total number of cases is made up of 698 men and 651 women, with people aged from babies to their early nineties.

There are 138 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Victoria that may have been acquired through community transmission. Currently 23 people are in hospital, including 11 patients in intensive care. 1280 people have recovered. More than 104,000 tests have been completed.

Of the total 1349 cases, there have been 1095 in metropolitan Melbourne and 216 in regional Victoria. Several cases remain under investigation.

Today the State Government announced a massive expansion of testing, which will help inform decisions about slowly lifting restrictions ahead of the State of Emergency being reviewed on 11 May.

“Up to 100,000 Victorians will be tested for coronavirus over the next two weeks as part of a major testing blitz across the state,” Victoria’s Chief Health Officer Professor Brett Sutton said.

“People with commons symptoms of coronavirus including fever, breathing difficulties, breathlessness, cough, sore throat, fatigue or tiredness and anyone who has any symptoms, no matter how mild, such as a runny nose or scratchy throat are encouraged to get tested.

“Our daily case numbers are still low which is encouraging. They prove that our physical distancing measures are working but this is not a time to relax our strong approach – this disease can get away from you very quickly as we have seen in cities overseas.”

Meanwhile, in the past 24 hours Victoria Police officers issued 29 fines to those breaching the directions in relation to staying at home, restricted activity and isolation directions after conducting 732 spot checks across the state as part of Operation Sentinel.

Examples of breaches that resulted in fines included, a group of twelve people gathering in public, six people gathering at a private residence for a party, a person hosting drinks for non-residents at his private residence, along with two others who were in attendance
