Victoria’s new container deposit scheme (CDS) is set to start in 2023 and is designed to maximise the return of used drink cans, bottles and cartons for recycling, and reduce Victoria’s litter by up to half.
Narre Warren South MP Gary Maas welcomed the recent announcement by the Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change, Lily D’Ambrosio, which outlined the final design of the scheme.
The final design was supported by 85 per cent of participants during public consultations and will see Victorians across the state able to return cans, bottles and cartons at various locations including shopping centres, drive through collection depots, mobile drop off points for events and community festivals.
The new scheme introduces great new and easy ways for charities and community and sports groups to fundraise as they do in other states, including through operating container collection points.
“Recycling is an integral part of reducing landfill and protecting the environment. I’m very happy to see that the Victorian container deposit scheme is so close to becoming a reality,” Mr Maas said.
“Our local community has made such great strides in helping the planet as they embrace renewable energy, recycling and waste reduction.
“This container deposit scheme will be another resource to reduce our impact on the environment.
“I look forward to people becoming accustomed to the scheme and its benefits for charities, sports groups, community fundraising and jobs.”
This model was chosen following detailed analysis of international and interstate schemes, to make sure Victoria has the best possible CDS.
It is expected to create new economic opportunities and jobs, with responsibilities for running the scheme split between a scheme coordinator and network operators.
The State Government will also ensure materials collected through the scheme are sold on the broad market to interested parties for remanufacturing in Victoria.
The State Government will continue to work closely with the beverage and recycling industries, and the community and charity sector as the legislation is developed.
