The Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal in and around Berwick is well underway.
Now in its 56th year, the Red Shield Appeal is the Salvos’ major fundraising appeal and aims to raise funds to support social and community services.
The funds raised locally will stay local and be used to support the Berwick START AOD (Alcohol and Other Drugs) Program.
The program transforms lives and gives new direction to people previously in addiction.
Major Greg Pack, who with his wife Lenore heads up the Salvos’ work at Berwick said: “as we emerge from Covid-19 lockdown, it became evident to us that more people than ever before are in need of support in some way.
“We are learning of some of the hardships that have occurred in the past twelve months and we’re doing all we can to respond to the escalating demands in our community.
“And if we’re unable to assist, then we always refer them onto another source or agency for further assistance.”
The impact of Covid-19 in 2020 caused isolation for most, but for some it actually created increased mental health struggles, with people using medication and increasing their alcohol intake to cope.
The Salvation Army’s AOD Program can create a common place of engagement for each person as part of their recovery journey.
“The community around Berwick has faithfully backed the Salvos, and this year we want to raise funds to ensure that we can continue the work in the community for years to come,” said Maj Pack.
The Salvos are encouraging the community to give generously and help ensure no one is left in need.
If you miss seeing a local Salvos member around the suburbs you donate directly to Berwick Salvos online.
The Salvos are embracing an online donation model, where people can donate directly or become a ‘Digital Doorknocker’ by creating a personal fundraising page and sharing with friends, family and colleagues.

“The Salvos can’t do what we do without the generosity of the public in our community,” Maj Pack said.
“If you’re able to, please consider donating to your local Salvos and the Red Shield Appeal.
Your generosity and support will help us to give hope where it’s needed most.”
