For this first time in its history, Berwick District Woodworkers Club is holding an exhibition of its work – and everyone is invited!
As part of the Casey Winter Arts Festival, the club will host an open exhibition weekend from Friday 9 to Sunday 11 July.
Around 340 pieces will be on display, from tiny brooches to full-size rocking horses, wood-turned bowls to carvings, jewellery boxes to small tables and more.
Many of the items on display will also be for sale.
Some of the members will also give live demonstrations of different woodworking techniques, including working on lathes and bandsaws to woodburning and carving.
Club member John McMahon said the woodworkers were excited to be finally opening their doors and giving people an insight into the club.
“Our club has been around for about 35 years and is probably best known in the community for the fact that each year we make about 800 – 1000 toys that are donated at Christmas time to different charity groups,” he explained.
“But the community probably doesn’t know much more about our club other than that.
“Our club members have a much wider range of woodworking interests than just making toys.”
He said the open exhibition would be an opportunity for members to showcase their talents and interests, with members of other woodworking clubs around Melbourne already promising to visit.
The club is also hoping to attract new members to the group, and anyone interested will be able to speak to members on the day about how to get involved.
The Berwick District Woodworkers Club open exhibition weekend will be held at the Old Cheese Factory, 34 Homestead Road, Berwick.
The event will be launched on Friday 9 July, 5pm-8pm, and will be open Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 July, 9am-5pm. Entry is free. A kids’ activity corner, raffle and tea and coffee will be available.
