More than main street

The cleanliness of Berwick beyond the main street has been called into question once again by concerned locals.

Star News has received several complaints from locals wanting to remain anonymous stating that rubbish build up in Berwick’s laneways and around the supermarkets was a blight on the town.

President of the Berwick Business Group Magda D’Abaco said they relied on the council’s waste management team to maintain the cleanliness of the streets.

“From the point of view of the Berwick Business Group we are proud of our beautiful village and would love to see our gardens and streets clean at all times,” she said.

“We do encourage the community and traders to clean up after themselves when in the village and use the numerous waste disposal bins located on the pathways and in the gardens/parks.

“Hopefully with traders and the community alerting the council about the excess rubbish in the streets that they will organise for the waste team to come past and clean up.”

Kerr Griffin of Griffin and Morris Village Butchers on High Street said he takes pride in keeping his shop front presentable.

He said while Berwick main street was well maintained, it seemed the back laneways were sometimes forgotten.

“The main street is kept well with the car park and the garden but it’s mainly the laneways that need more attention to detail,” Kerr said.

“On weekends, there are one or two spots on Adams Lane that has a rubbish problem.

“If there were rubbish bins there, it wouldn’t be an issue.

“Just from my observations, there are no rubbish bins in the laneways yet they’re a thoroughfare for customers.”

Kerr did say that the council had cleaned up the back laneway recently after what appeared to be an illegal rubbish dump had occurred last week.

“That was good to see,” he said.
