Retirees seek thrills

Retirees are planning to move past the pandemic by improving their health and booking adrenaline-filled activities and adventurous holidays in the next two years, according to a new survey.

The survey shows half of retirees from south east Melbourne, including retirees from City of Casey, are taking steps to improve their health since the pandemic started, by eating healthier (35 per cent) and focusing on fitness (28 per cent).

The Retirement Living Lifestyle Report was commissioned by Lendlease to gain insights into the lifestyle aspirations of Australian retirees aged 55 and over, with 4,380 people surveyed nationally.

With 75 retirement living villages across the country and more than 17,000 residents calling Lendlease villages home, the data is being used to ensure the villages continue to support residents to fulfil their lifestyle desires during retirement.

Nineteen per cent of retirees stated feeling more outgoing, 15 per cent are having more fun and 12 per cent feel more adventurous.

In the next two years, thrill-seeking local retirees are interested in going on an adventurous holiday (24 per cent), try hot air ballooning (six per cent) and go sky diving (three per cent).

Romance is on the cards for five per cent of local retirees, who state they are interested in finding a new love in the next two years.

Travelling the world is the top bucket list item, with more than half (53 per cent) saying they would spend their savings on holidays in the next two years.

Lendlease Retirement Living managing director Nathan Cockerill said it was great to see Australian retirees keeping their health and wellbeing in check.

“It’s fantastic to know Australian retirees are looking forward to making the most of life by chasing their sense of adventure and ticking off their bucket lists once conditions permit,” Mr Cockerill said.

“There are a handful of retirees more daring than me – I don’t plan on hot air ballooning or sky diving any time soon, but maybe that will change when I reach retirement.”
