Is your child struggling with emotional outbursts? Is your child feeling anxious about returning to school after the lockdown? Is your teenager feeling depressed?

These are some mental health issues that children and adolescents are impacted by because of the COVID-19 restrictions and recurring lockdowns. A common experience is a feeling of disconnection and loss due to the removal of social freedoms such as not being able to connect with friends, grandparents and loved ones. Some children may experience trauma responses such as fears of leaving the house or avoiding certain places.

Anxiety is often experienced through bodily responses such as a racing heart, dizziness or stomach pains. Children can find it hard to put these feelings into words – giving children a sense of control can help them overcome anxiety. Parents can offer empathy and use curiosity statements like it seems like you are feeling worried in response to fears or sometimes it can feel scary in response to regressive behaviours like bedwetting. Play Therapy allows children to ‘play out’ fears or worries, releases tension and stress held in their body and can help to regulate their emotions.
