The Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP) has agreed to move a traffic signal that is currently blocking the entrance to a long-standing Berwick business.
When Berwick Veterinary Hospital owner Thomas Brennan noticed the new set of traffic lights in his driveway – erected as part of the Clyde Road level crossing removal – he was outraged and called for action.
“Every other business on Clyde Road has access except us, and it was never on the plans,” Dr Brennan said.
The Berwick Veterinary Hospital has had dual access for the past 30 years.
The development means customers can no longer turn right into the business and cannot exit onto Clyde Road.
Mr Brennan said he was not notified of the position of the traffic signal and asked the LXRP to move the light before the project’s completion on Monday 21 February.
“I’m embarrassed they think this is an acceptable design and that a small business can cop this,” Dr Brennan said.
After Dr Brennan’s requests, the LXRP team undertook further investigations and have agreed to relocate the traffic signal to where it was prior to the level crossing removal works.
The works to relocate the signal will commence in March, subject to contractor availability.
LXRP program director Andrew Pepplinkhouse said the traffic light was not being built in a location that will impact the business.
“We’re working closely with residents and local businesses to minimise construction impacts and address any concerns as we continue our work to cut congestion and make the Pakenham line boom gate-free by 2025,” Mr Pepplinkhouse said.
“We thank residents for their patience as crews work to remove the Clyde Road level crossing – which will allow motorists to travel underneath the new rail bridge for the first time.”
