Building community leaders

City of Casey residents now have the chance to learn how to become a strong community leader thanks to the Community Leadership Program.

Back for a second year, the program provides free training for locals to build leadership skills and learn about community engagement and local government.

The annual program aims to support Casey residents aged 18 and over who have a desire to make a difference and engage in community life.

Thirty participants graduated from the first Community Leadership Program and City of Casey chair of administrators Noelene Duff said she was looking forward to meeting this year’s participants.

“Council is committed to empowering Casey’s future leaders and as we saw last year, the program not only benefits individual participants and their community groups, it also continues to benefit our wider community through strengthening networks and local democracy,” Ms Duff said.

The program will run from May until September 2022 and includes both online and face-to-face workshops to be held on Saturday and Tuesday evenings.

The workshops will cover leadership styles, communication and presentation skills, building community capacity, working with volunteers and local resources and networking, understanding local government and how to contribute to the democratic process.

Graduates will have the chance to participate in ongoing networking opportunities where they can gain practical experience in leading community and council projects.

Graduate Sifatullah Ulfat said the program was a great way to learn about local government.

“The program is very interactive, and the sessions are very informative,” Mr Ulfat said.

“For me as an individual, I learnt a lot.”

The recruitment of participants will aim to reflect diversity in Casey.

Expressions of interests are now open until 5pm on Tuesday 22 March.

The selection process will include an informal interview and a maximum of 30 participants will be selected to participate in the program.
