Blaze destroys Berwick garage

About 25 firefighters were called to fight a blaze that destroyed a garage at a residential property in Berwick on Wednesday 3 August.

CFA crews from Berwick, Narre Warren and Beaconsfield were called to Lincoln Avenue, Berwick about 4pm after residents of the house were alerted to the blaze by a smoke alarm.

At this stage the cause of the fire is undetermined, according to Berwick CFA Lieutenant Craig Durdin.

“I think the message to push home here is the importance of having working smoke alarms in the home,” he said.

The residents had evacuated the house at the time of CFA crews’ arrival, after which it took about 20 minutes to bring the fire under control,

The flames burned through the interior of the garage, causing the roof to collapse, but did not extend into the main part of the house.

It is believed there were no cars parked in the garage at the time.
