Crawley Road closure powers ahead

Major Road Projects Victoria crews have begun works at Crawley Road as part of the Narre Warren North Road Upgrade.

Crawley Road will be closed to traffic until 5pm Friday 28 October. Pedestrian access will be maintained during these works.

Closing Crawley Road will allow crews to safely upgrade the intersection and reduce overall disruption to local residents, MRPV said.

During the closure, crews will remove the existing kerb, traffic islands and road surface, upgrade public lighting, lay new asphalt, and upgrade the footpath.

Detours will be in place via Brundrett Road.

The Crawley Road closure follows a traffic switch in August that saw traffic transitioned onto the newly created northbound lanes on Narre Warren North Road.

Works are also underway to upgrade the southbound lanes along with major construction underway at Memorial Drive to build the new signalised intersection.

Upon completion of the Narre Warren North Upgrade in 2023, Crawley Road will become left-in and left-out only and right turns from Brundrett Road to Narre Warren North Road will be removed.

A signalised U-turn will be installed near Crawley Road to accommodate motorists wishing to turn right onto Narre Warren North Road.

MRPV said the project, together with the Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road Upgrade, will create greater capacity on this key north-south road corridor servicing Melbourne’s growing southeastern suburbs.

Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan said adding additional lanes in each direction and upgrading key intersections will improve safety for the 14,000 vehicles that travel along this section of Narre Warren North Road each day.

“We’re delivering some of the biggest road and rail projects Victoria has ever seen – improving the journeys of thousands of motorists every day,” he said.

The road closure comes as a blow to some residents, who have long expressed concern about the current upgrade designs, calling them “unsafe and impractical”.

In late September the Liberals and Nationals, in support of residents, announced a $5 million commitment to redesign plans for the upgrade, ahead of the State Election.

The Liberals and Nationals plan would scrap current U-turn designs in favour of a set of traffic lights installed at Crawley Road and a break in the centre at Brundrett Road.
