Mt Burnett vollies capture the moment a bright object crosses the night sky

Bright objects across the winter sky were picked up by the Mount Burnett Observatory on their all-sky camera and volunteers were happy to report the capture of an image.

On Wednesday 3 July, Mount Burnett volunteers said they had heard there were multiple reports on social media of bright objects in the sky stretching from Tasmania to several hundred kilometres north of Melbourne.

The volunteers at Mt Burnett have an AllSky camera which records images of the sky 24/7 and were able to capture one of the objects in the moments it crossed from south to north.

Secretary and committee member Kim Steere said they were able to capture an image of the first object sighted at 6.23 pm Wednesday.

“We didn’t get an image of the second event at 9.03 pm,” she said.

“We suspect it’s a meteor, but it could also be space junk.”

Ms Steere has promised to let Star News Group know if they find out what the objects were.

For now, any curious night-gazing public can view the sky around Melbourne live through the camera at allsky.mbo.org.au/allsky
