The local community at Narre Warren celebrated in droves on Saturday 27 July with the completion of the major works on the brand new station.
There were hundreds of coffees, sausages, baked goods and boxes of popcorn being handed out, alongside entertainment from roving performers, a balloonist, a face painter and a DJ.
Roughly 300 sausages and veggie sausages, as well as bread and tasty treats were supplied by local businesses including AR Afghan Butcher and Supermarket and Valley Fair Continental Bakery – all served by the Narre Warren Scouts.
Local businesses also received some boons as 200 vouchers were given away during the Spin and Win competition.
The celebration also welcomed the return of local Narre Warren icon, football and radio star Brendan Fevola; with his statue now taking temporary residence inside the forecourt for the next four weeks.
Fevola’s statue will be welcoming commuters making use of the new, modernised facilities of Narre Warren Station, with elevated platforms, accessible by lifts and stairs with an enclosed, air-conditioned waiting room and a new ticket office.
The Webb Street level crossing was permanently removed in 2023, with the new station opening in March this year.
Over the recent months, finishing works included the upgrades to 672 car spaces, the planting of more than 63,000 new plants, shrubs and grasses, and completing a shared-use path to better connect pedestrians and cyclists through the area.
The crossing at Webb Street was one of the most dangerous in Melbourne, with 19 near misses between 2012 and 2023, with the boom gates being down to a third of the morning peak, causing congestion for 13,200 vehicles every day.
