National Reconciliation Week at Bunjil

Residents in the City of Casey have been invited to a free community event that acknowledges and honours the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and histories, this coming National Reconciliation Week.

Held on Thursday, 29 May at Bunjil Plaza, the event will include and begin with a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony at 4pm, followed closely by the raising of the flag at 4:45pm.

Casey’s mayor, Stefan Koomen, said that “this free community event is a wonderful opportunity to strengthen our connection to reconciliation”.

“We want community members of all ages to come together to celebrate and learn, reflect and look forward to the future of reconciliation.”

With a variety of hands-on cultural activities, there will also be a story time at the Bunjil Place Library at 5pm, with bookings required, and live music by Charlie Needs Braces at 5:30pm.

The theme of this year’s Reconciliation Week, which goes from 27 May to 3 June, is ‘Bridging Now to Next’, which is said to be a call for reflection of shared history and to build stronger connections with one another.

The Thursday event will be capped off with a screening of The Last Daughter in the library at 6:45pm, with bookings also required.
