The second-coming of Berwick’s women’s football team is over after a heartbreaking elimination final loss to Montrose on Sunday in the Eastern Football Netball League’s Division 2 Women’s competition.

A game of momentum swings finished in Montrose’s favour at the final siren, having recovered from a three-quarter-time deficit to win 9.9 63 to 7.4 46.

The dynamic forward duo of Alari Malkoun and Kasey Exposito played their part with four and two goals respectively, but they were unable to hold Montrose at bay, which stormed home with the final four goals of the game to snatch victory.

Exposito, Malkoun, Brooke Watson, Shanyce Eberhardt, Courtney Siwes and Sienna Pinnock were among Berwick’s best players.

It’s a tough lesson to learn for Berwick’s young women’s side, but one that will hold them in good stead for future occasions and is likely to light a flame underneath them during the upcoming preseason.

A squad that came together late in preseason found the all-important chemistry needed to shock the field and win enough games to crack the top four, but was found wanting on the biggest stage.

Malbkoun finished as the competition’s leading goal kicker with Watson, Hayley Woolfe, Sohpie Simpson and Zahra Clavarino, a handful of the team’s most consistent players in 2024.
