Top-three teams fire for Panthers on scorching day of bowls

NARRE WARREN BOWLS

Bowlers were challenged in round 12 of Pennant Bowls on Saturday as the greens heated up on one of the hottest days of the season.

The top side at Narre Warren Bowls Club (NWBC) had a must-win game against Keysborough.

The Panthers knew that a win would raise them to sixth on the ladder and safe for the time being from being relegated.

NWBC included new club member Matthew Azzopardi to the top side and he fitted in very well.

The Panthers jumped out to an early lead and were determined to not drop off this week and finished the game well winning 96-54 overall and gaining 16 points.

Best rink: Craig Moore; Eric Sydenham; Chris Johnson and Steve Ellard +19

The second side travelled to local rivals Berwick knowing that a tough game was on the horizon.

With nothing in it all day on the main scoreboard, Narre Warren eventually got the win with a very tight 75-73 victory.

The Panthers, who gained 16 points, have now set themselves up for a push in the finals now sitting in third spot.

Best rink: Keith Emms; Percy Herath; David Wood and Alan Hilton +9

The third side of NWBC had the biggest win of the season against Armadale.

With all rinks winning and picking up a very comfortable 18 points they are also looking forward to a successful finals series.

They now sit third after their dominant 128-37 win.

Best rink: Michael Toole; Lindsay Gibson; Bryan Biasci and Greg Davies +38

The fourth side, playing in Division 4, welcomed Cardinia Waters to the Panther Dome.

In a game that was close for most of the day and looked like NWBC might pull off an upset, Cardinia Waters pulled away at the end.

The Panthers went down, winning one rink for two points in a 70-81 win for Cardinia Waters.

Best rink: Donna Wood; Barry Graham; David Inifer and Geoff Miller +14

NWBC fifth side, playing in Division 5, travelled to Monbulk and bowls did not go our way up there at all.

Monbulk was too strong, with NWBC picking up two points but going down 63-92 overall.

Best rink: Janice Moran; Tom O’Loughlin; Pauline Blake and Ian Miller +2

The Panthers’ sixth side, playing in Division 7, are another NWBC team setting themselves for a finals push.

They welcomed Boronia to the Dome knowing a win here would guarantee finals.

NWBC got off to an early lead and were never headed; winning two rinks and an overall win 82-56. Best rink: Joe Selfridge; Wilma Haringsma; Ted Tratt and John Rogers +22

The Ferguson Plarre Rink of the Day winners for round 12 is: Michael Toole; Lindsay Gibson; Bryan Biasci and Greg Davies with a 44-6 victory.
