Brilliant back nine lifts Axford to impressive countback win

With the predicted rain staying away the wind was the only trouble for the 95 players contesting June’s Monthly Medal at Drouin Golf and Country Club.

Dave Axford won the Medal on a countback with an impressive nett five-under on the back nine to finish with nett 68 for the day.

Dave Cavanagh shot the best scratch score with 79 in the tricky conditions.

Bob Simpson was the winner of A Grade with a nett 71 and the Super Six with nett 18, while Paul Timewell was runner up on a countback with nett 72 and Scott Green finished third also with nett 72. B Grade was won by Chris Stoker with nett 70, runner up was Mitchell Baker with nett 73 and third place was Stuart Benjamin with nett 74.

Monthly Medal winner Dave Axford won C Grade on a countback with nett 68, with Peter Jolley runner up also with nett 68.

Ned Marsh claimed third place with nett 70.

Down the lines went to Mick Wardle 72, Ray Smith 72, Dave Cavanagh 73, Lucas Green 73, Kevin Johnson 73, Andrew Stevens 74, John Wolswinkel 74, Geoff Closter 75, Cam Snell 75, Darren Wolfenbuttel 75, Tristan Ashby 75, Mitch Dyer 75, Rod Gardner 75 and Ken Cooper 75.

Nearest the pins went to 5th Vic Bradshaw (Sharkey’s Barbershop), 8th Bob Simpson, 10th Gareth Rees (Pro Pin), 14th Cam Snell (Commercial Hotel) and 18th Nathan Thomson (Target Hole).

Wednesday

A field of 89 players contested the midweek Stableford competition last week.

Winner of A Grade was Phil Thomson who scored 37 points, while Glenn Vanderligt was runner up with 35 points.

Mike Duddy won B Grade with 35 points and Robert Ramage was runner up with 34 points.

C Grade saw the best two scores for the day with Andrew Gaul winning with 40 points and Callum McKenzie coming runner up with 39 points.

John Wilson won the Super Six on a countback with 13 points.

Down the lines went to Len Cole 35, Duart Perrin 34, Ron Tomasetti 34, Roger Crow 34, Corey Thomson 34, James Hull 34, Daryl Bryce 33, Todd Griffiths 33, Daniel Anderson 33, John Wilson 33 and Keith Crew 33c/b.

Nearest the pins went to 5th Callum McKenzie, 8th Corey Thomson, 10th Colin Kennard and 14th Daniel Anderson.

The Medley Stableford competition on Sunday was won by Matthew Carlson with 37 points and Dave Axford won a ball down the line with 35 points.

Upcoming competitions this week are Stableford midweek and Sunday.

Saturday is a Stableford Aggregate and the first round of qualifying for the Stroud Trophy.

Thursday is a nine-hole Stableford competition.

DROUIN LADIES

Drouin Ladies played an Individual Stroke event competing for the June Monthly Medal on Tuesday June 3 in better-than-expected weather conditions.

The daily winner was Laraine Harrison (42) with 71 nett and runner up was Leanne Pollard (10) with 73 nett.

Down the line balls went to Glenda Warren 77, Vanessa Campbell 78 and Angela Greenall 80.

Nearest the pins went to 5th Leanne Pollard, 8th (Second shot) Angela Greenall, 10th Paula Logan, 14th Leanne Pollard and 17th (Second shot) Leanne Pollard.

Best scratch score was Leanne Pollard with 83 off the stick.

The playoff for the May Monthly Medal was won by Kay Feaver and the June Monthly Medal was won by Laraine Harrison.

Congratulations to Laraine on her first medal win.

Saturday June 7 was a Stroke event for the women and the winner was Laura Tsindos (20) with 72 nett.

This week is a Three-Person Ambrose event and Tuesday 17 June is the Doris Chambers 4BBB stableford event, followed by an individual Stableford event on June 24.

The club held a nine-hole Ambrose event on Saturday May 31, followed by refreshments and platters.

This was another successful day with some promising new golfers enjoying the course.
