Cannons remain on top with big victory

It was a solid weekend for the Casey Hockey Club as the Cannons won three senior matches, including their Men’s Vic League (MVL2) and Women’s Vic League (WVL1) with a combined score of 13-1.

As they have done so often, the MVL2 side made light work of St Bede’s to win 6-1 and keep their spot at the top of the ladder.

They outclassed their opponents from the first whistle and looked in control for the entire match.

The Cannons had three multiple goal scorers on the day, led by captain Craig Moore who sets the tone for the team every week.

Bryan Young and Bopanna Prince Achandira each netted two goals in the victory, causing the St Bede’s defenders headaches wherever they looked.

Prolific goal scorer Tristan Chaffey was kept quiet on this occasion which is rare to see as the star has scored 20 goals so far this season, 10 more than anyone else in the league.

Casey will shift its focus to this weekend’s clash against Frankston and will expect to bring home another win against the battling team.

The strong victory in the top division was the only victory across Casey’s men’s teams last weekend as MVL2 Reserves and Men’s Metro 2 South sides both finished with draws.

The Cannons drew with St Bede’s 3-3 in the MVL2 Reserves thanks to a brilliant performance from Ryan Pruscino who scored all three goals and put on a clinic.

The Men’s Metro 2 South side did everything it could to pinch a narrow victory against OHA, but neither side was able to register a score with the game ending in a 0-0 draw.

The scoreline was somewhat reflective of how both sides have performed this season, as they sit 10th and 11th with two wins apiece.

The Men’s Pennant D South East was outclassed 5-0 against MCC at Haileybury College in a tough loss for the side.

The Women’s Vic League (WVL1) team had a huge 7-0 victory against Monash University who has a solid 5-5-2 record this season.

The Cannons were firing and couldn’t be stopped as they dominated play across the entire field to put some real pressure on their opponents.

Charlotte Smith and Chantelle Calado were in fine form as the pair netted two goals each and dominated at the attacking end.

Other contriutors were Samantha Dobrich, Jessica Rowland and Samantha Wagg who score one goal each.

Casey sits fourth on the ladder but will be looking to close the gap in coming weeks and push towards the top three.

The WVL1 Reserves fell short against Monash despite putting up a strong fight, narrowly losing 3-2 at the final whistle.

Rebecca Gregory and Mia Joiner were the goal scorers for the Cannons and gave their team a chance for the points, but it wasn’t quite enough.

The Women’s Pennant E South East team capped off the third senior win of the weekend with a 1-0 victory against Camberwell.

It was a huge win for the Cannons, given that Camberwell are first on the ladder and considered the toughest team in the competition.

It was Casey’s Jane Gipp who scored the match-winning goal to give her side the lead and the points, putting the Cannons into the top four.

Finally, the Women’s Metro 1 side gave their best effort, but it was to no avail as OHA defeated them 4-1.

Karen Martz produced the only goal for the Cannons in a spectacular piece of play which was one of just a few highlights on the day.

Casey Hockey Club will be looking to bounce back this weekend in a winnable game against Frankston.
