Pakenham Bowls Club opens up for exciting new competition

Pakenham Bowls Club is pushing open the doors of its wonderful facility on Anderson Street with the ambition of welcoming new bowlers and the local community to the club.

Some key initiatives are underpinning the club’s drive to attract some fresh feet through the door, including a Twilight Bowls Competition for new and non-pennant bowlers that will run over seven-consecutive Wednesdays from February 4 through to ‘finals night’ on March 18.

Premiership glory and cash prizes will be up for grabs in a relaxed and friendly environment, with the club hoping to attract teams of sponsors, local business and community groups…or just groups of mates looking for an exciting new challenge.

The club will provide all bowls equipment; promising music, barbecue snags and drinks at almost 1973 prices, with the weekly competition to run from 6 to 8pm.

Club President John Parker is hoping the Twilight Competition slogan of ‘Beers Bowls and Bangers’ will attract a new audience of potential new bowlers and members.

He is also keen to tap into a youthful explosion in the sport; particularly prevalent in the western suburbs of Melbourne.

“This really is about welcoming new bowlers and locals to the club,” Parker said.

“We have this great facility that the community can utilise; as a new watering hole or club, and we would like to attract new members; bowls is such a growing sport in some areas.

“We would like to add a youthful element to our already loyal membership base.”

Parker explained that the game of bowls allows the competitive juices to flow.

He is hoping a simple introduction to the sport will trigger the prospect of a transition to competitive bowls.

“We would like to attract members that are new to sport, but also people that have played competitive sports in the past,” he said.

“There’s a real team element to bowls; it’s a sport, first and foremost, at the end of the day.”

Pakenham Bowls Club is also providing alternative introductions to the sport, with a ‘Try Bowls Day’ organised for Sunday 15 February.

It’s a free day, running from 11am to 2pm, where locals can simply wander in and give bowls a go!

The traditionally popular ‘Barefoot Bowls’ is also available at the club, beginning at 4pm on Fridays, while the bar is now open to members and the public from 4pm from Thursday through Saturday.

Groups or individuals interested in the Twilight Bowls Competition, or Try Bowls Day, can contact John Parker direct on 0417 052 528 for more details.
