CRANBOURNE BOWLS

The sound of alarm clocks beeping could be heard a little earlier around Cranbourne on Saturday with Pennant matches beginning at 10am to combat the extreme heat being forecast for the day.

Instructions from Bowls Victoria were to start early unless other arrangements had been made.

The Division 4 game between Cranbourne 3 and Dandenong Club 4 – which would have been a very good game – was abandoned due to the heat policy with both teams sharing the points with nine each.

Cranbourne 1 Div 1 took on Mentone Edge 1 at home on the front grass green.

Cranbourne’s best rink was skipped by Lyn Quigg, third Ron (Two Dogs) Lyfield, second Peter Elgar and Lead Wayne (Spanky) Stevens who had a ding-dong battle with their opponents.

However, the lads won the last two ends to edge in front, winning 23-20.

Next best was the rink of Skip Jay Tootell, third Matt (SOS) Stevens, second Stephen Arms and Lead Joe Byrne who just couldn’t bridge the gap, with scoring ends of mainly one.

The result, saw Cranbourne 1 go down by nine shots, 13-22.

The team skipped by Chris (Chewy) Hunt, third Gerry Schryver, second Kirsty Tootell and Lead Dale Henry did play well, but gave away a six, four and three which was basically the difference in the end, going down 12-27.

The fourth rink, skipped by Scott Guymer, third Gavin Wright, second Chadd Tootell and Lead Barry McKay battled hard with again the difference being three or four multiple ends.

Guymer’s rink went down 14-29.

• Cranbourne 1 Div 1 (62) def by Mentone Edge 1 (98) -36 shots/2 points.

Cranbourne 2 Div 2 travelled to Berwick to take on their number-one team on the front grass green. Best rink for Cranbourne was skipped by Tony Collins, third Phil Nielsen, second Bill Sherriff and Lead Vic Butera who pushed the great team of Geoff and Tom Van Vught, Charlie Azzopardi and John Harwood to their lowest rink win all season.

The Berwick rink won 20-17 with their previous lowest score against them being 10 shots.

The game was very well played as well as being played in great spirit.

Next best rink was skipped by Hans Worsteling, third Chris Stevenson, second Barry Thomas and Lead Barry Graham who went down 19-23.

Next was the rink of Skip Shane Jakins, third Robert Bernardo, second John Stanley and Lead Brian Turton who fell behind early but kept at it and fought back to only go down by six…14-20 in the end. The rink skipped by Nick Arnold, third Karen Hickson, second Louis Magri and Lead Dennis Tomlin were down 3-15 at one stage, but kept at it scoring two good multiples to get back in the game.

The Berwick team they played are a quality team and eventually pulled away to win 14-25.

After dropping into Berwick to watch the last six ends; I can report this was a very good game of bowls.

It’s been a tough season for the team, but Saturday looked very promising and the team was highly competitive; very well done to both teams.

• Cranbourne 2 Div 2 (64) def by Berwick 1 (88) -24 shots/0 points.

Cranbourne 3 Div 4 were to travel and take on Dandenong Club 4 but the Heat Policy came into effect and the game was abandoned; the teams sharing the points.

Cranbourne 4 Div 5 played at home on the front synthetic and took on top of the ladder Burden Park 2.

Again, the Cranbourne team tried very hard and can be very proud of their efforts.

They were eventually over powered, but they gave it their all and we congratulate them all.

Best rink for Cranbourne 4 was skipped by Bruce Harper, third Steve Bakker, second Helen Blake and Lead Rod Challis who couldn’t be separated after 21 ends.

They finished 16-16 which was a great effort from the team.

Next best was Skip Harry Van Soest, third Claudio Miotto, second Helen Winter and Lead Olive Stanley who went down 16-26.

We then had the rink skipped by Marijan Bobetic, third Rob Gye, second Davina Bobetic and Lead Elizabeth Hughes who also went down by 10 shots, 12-22.

The team of Skip David McMaster, third Peter Margiannis, second Suzanne Buchan and Lead Jeanne Tomlin put their best foot forward but they were just outplayed going down by 14 shots, 13-27.

• Cranbourne 4 Div 5 (57) def by Burden Park 2 (91) -34 shots/1 point.

We’ll done to all teams for putting in such a great effort considering the warm day.

MIDWEEK PENNANT

Without the support of all midweek players Cranbourne would not be in the position it is right now. About a month back, the midweek selectors had a look at our teams and where we were going and what were we going to do.

The club has three Midweek teams; Cranbourne 1 Div 1, Cranbourne 2 Div 3 and Cranbourne 3 Div 5.

All three teams were heading for relegation and we needed to address the issues and see if there was anything we could do to rectify the slide.

Selectors looked at every possible option; came up with some thoughts and without trying to weaken the C1 and C3 teams endeavoured to strengthen the C2 team in order to avoid relegation. The past three weeks have seen an improvement in teams and positions on the ladder.

On behalf of selectors, thank you C1, C2 and C3 players for assisting and supporting the plan; we now have to continue to hold or improve our position.

Cranbourne 1 Div 1 playing at home of the front grass green, did its very best, but we’re no match for the seasoned Narre Warren 1 team.

Selectors will endeavour to provide the best players possible to support the team in the last part of the season.

Best rink for the day was Skip Chris Stevenson, third Louis Magri, second Karen Hickson and Lead Scott De Piazza who tried hard, but went down 11-23.

The teams skipped by Nick Arnold and Rob Paganoni both had tough days, but there’s always the next week to rebound.

Thanks to Kirsty and Chadd Tootell for helping out the club over the past month, but Chadd must get back to school and Kirsty back to work.

Thank you to all that helped when the club put out the call; we appreciate your efforts.

• Cranbourne 1 Div 1 (29) def by Narre Warren 1 (74) -45 shots/0 points.

Cranbourne 3 Div 5 travelled to take on Parkdale 3 on their blue synthetic and gave a pretty good effort and can be proud of their performance.

Best rink for the day was skipped by John Kent, third John Anstiss, second Liz Hughes and Lead Helen Blake who had a close game with their opponents, but prevailed to win 18-17.

Next was the team skipped by David McMaster, third Rod Challis, second Peter Margiannis and Lead Rob Gye.

This team was in front for most of the game, but gave away a three and four on the last two ends. Tough luck team, but remember that for next you play them.

• Cranbourne 3 Div 5 (50) def by Parkdale 3 (69) -19 shots/2 points.

Cranbourne 2 Div 3 played at home on the synthetic green and took on Pakenham 2 in a game we were looking forward too and hopefully might win or provide a good showing.

Well, as Skip and writer of this article I could not have been prouder or happier with this team.

All three rinks put in a magnificent effort and we were hoping to get to fifth position with a win. However, this was a day for this team to click and we actually ran away from our Pakenham opponents to win the game by three rinks to nil.

Best rink was skipped by Derek Maguire, third Bill Sherriff, second Steve Bentley and Lead Brian Turton, winning their rink 32-13.

They were followed by Skip Harry VanSoest, third Dermot McConville, second Jacqui Warner and Lead Frank Verco who won 23-11.

The rink skipped by Phil Nielsen, third John Stanley, second Cheryl Wright and Lead Dennis Tomlin won its rink 22-15.

I have to say, from my observations, every team member did something…nobody needed to be carried in a bloody great effort.

With such a good performance Cranbourne 2 is now in fourth position on the ladder, with a greatly-improved points being 90.

The team’s percentage increased to 101.39 and the score difference is now positive eight.

Keep it going folks and let’s continue to do our best; Go Cranny Midweek!

• Cranbourne 2 Div 3 (77) def Pakenham 2 (39) +38 shots/16 points.
