BRENTWOOD Park Primary School recently held a Cultural Diversity Day to celebrate its diverse community backgrounds.
Students, staff and parents marked the occasion by hosting workshops in dance, song, music, storytelling and creative arts.
The day started with students greeting visitors and other students in many different languages represented within the school.
A particular highlight was a welcome greeting and acknowledgment of the elder of the Wurundjeri tribe and original custodians of this land by his great-niece and Brentwood Park student Michaela George.
The morning began with a celebration of the Berwick school’s unity as everyone sang the Green and the Gold and waved streamers in the air.
The band and choir showcased their understanding and appreciation of music from different cultures through a wonderful performance of The Lion Sleeps Tonight.
In each workshop students learnt about the origins of their particular activity.
Children who performed the Indonesian coconut dance learnt coconuts were plentiful, cheap and accessible in Indonesia and all children whether rich or poor could learn this cultural dance.
Students also had the opportunity to experience dance and movement from many other cultures, such as bush dancing, the haka, hip hop, Greek, German, Asian and taekwondo.
The day ended with a finale concert by visiting performers which was enjoyed by all in attendance.
