THE Hallam Red Cross celebrated its 27th birthday this week with volunteers coming together to mark the occasion.
Volunteer Red Cross member Eunice Welch was the afternoon’s guest speaker.
She spoke of her work in the Red Cross’ used stamp department, explaining the procedure of sorting and packaging stamps for sale.
The annual fundraiser raised $7000 this year with stamp collectors from across the globe buying the used stamps.
Following the speech all members enjoyed an afternoon tea with volunteer Jean Edwards, who was also celebrating her own birthday, having the honour of cutting the birthday cake.
Chairperson Josephine Thompson presented thank-you certificates to all members who had collected for Red Cross Calling and thanked the many guests who attended and supported the Red Cross unit.
Secretary Betty Keen has been involved in the unit for the past 15 years and said she had made many friends and helped raise a lot of money during her time there.
The unit raises at least $3000 a year through two cake stalls, raffles, pokie trips and door knocking.
Ms Keen said being a Red Cross volunteer was a great social outlet with many dedicated members.
Anyone wishing to donate their used stamps to the Red Cross can drop them at the collection box at the Berwick Mechanics Institute Library, High Street Berwick.
