“HEY, look, it’s that guy off Rodder’s Life!”
Sitting at the traffic lights has not been the same for Narre Warren East car enthusiast Michael Dascoli since he began hosting Rodder’s Life on Channel 31 three years ago.
The hot rod show has become the channel’s highest-rating program and, in doing so, has made Mr Dascoli a cult figure.
“I have people coming up to me saying that it’s the best show on telly, period,” he laughed.
“I’m just a panel beater, so it’s really daunting. I’m not used to it – I’m no different to anyone else.”
That may not be completely true.
Mr Dascoli is passionate about hot rods and classic cars. He drives up to 1000 kilometres every week to put Australia’s best car restorers on our screens.
“The show came about because we have so many talented people and no one would know about it until you see their cars,” he said.
Rodder’s Life appeals to all age groups. Mr Dascoli is also keen to point out that it is not only men who tune in.
“More and more women are becoming involved. It is not just a man-dominated sport,” he said.
“Without an understanding woman, us blokes wouldn’t be able to build a car. There are a lot of women these days who have their own cars.
“They get their hands dirty or get their husbands to build one for them.”
Mr Dascoli prides himself on the program being family-oriented and is distinctly aware of the niche audience it attracts.
“What I love about it is that it’s a family show,” he said.
“We have a lot of blokes congregate. One car club has its meetings on Tuesday night to watch the show.”
Rodder’s Life airs at 9pm, and is also replayed several other times throughout the week. The new season begins next month.
