Central to community

SELANDRA Community Place has been leading by example in sustainable living practices for one year.
The community hub, located in Clyde North, recently celebrated its first birthday.
Selandra Community Place is an Australian-first, interactive, eight-star, zero-energy community hub which showcases a variety of sustainability, community strengthening, and health and well-being initiatives.
City of Casey acting manager community strengthening James Rouse said the Selandra Community Place program included a range of fantastic activities including yoga, playgroups, a walking group, craft club, book club and an edible garden workshop.
“Residents have benefited immensely over the last year from the community engagement activities which have enabled them to meet their neighbours, participate in activities and feel more connected to their new community and the services local government provides,” he said.
“One of the key strengths of Selandra Community Place has been that the community hub and activities were part of the Selandra Rise estate from the time the first residents moved in.
“This has encouraged a sense of community cohesion from the very beginning of the new community and has allowed the residents to connect to their new neighbours.”
City of Casey manager environment Nicola Ward said in addition to the community engagement activities, ideas for environmental sustainability and cost savings for people building or renovating a home were a focus.
“The hub displays sustainability information and sustainable building practices to influence residents and the construction industry to achieve sustainable outcomes in the residential housing market,” she said.
“The hub features a unique, sustainable, product information system personalised to the needs of visitors through informative cards, a mobile website, interactive floorplan, real-time energy monitoring and interpretative signage.”
