TWO Berwick families celebrated Valentine’s Day in a unique way when their pet dogs tied the knot.
Roxy, pet to the Font family, and Scooby, the loved pet of the Spooner family, were ‘married’ at Pets at Home in Narre Warren.
The families live a few doors from each other and the dogs often play and are exercised together, according to Kelly Font.
Mrs Font said they became aware of the wedding package when they visited the store and suggested it to their neighbours.
“It is a bit of fun – we didn’t take it too seriously,” she said. “We did it as a special thing for the children.”
Between them, the families have seven children aged under 11. The union took place in the afternoon so the children could attend after school.
Roxy, a Labrador cross Border Collie and Scooby, a Labrador cross Kelpie were groomed by Pets at Home staff before being dressed as the bride and groom.
The dogs were walked down aisle and staff member Allan Feeley read the vows to the happy couple.
Store manager Mark Cusack said instead of exchanging rings the dogs were assisted by their owners to exchange dog tags.
The dogs were served their own birthday cake made by dog cake specialist Happy Yappers and the family members shared in a Krispy Kreme doughnut tower. The occasion was photographed for the family albums.
Mr Cusack said about 30 people watch the ceremony.
“It is a light hearted occasion – no one takes it too seriously.”
Four more weddings were held over last weekend and Pets at Home anticipate offering the service again next Valentine’s Day.
