Birdman stirs up quite a flap

BERWICK birdman Peter Day may not have set any records, but he certainly made plenty of people smile.
The 61-year-old featured in the News last week as he prepared for his jump in the Birdman event at the Moomba Festival.
While only recording a leap of about five metres – well below his 20-metre plus prediction – Peter still wowed the Moomba crowd.
“We went running off the deck and a big gust of wind picked up as I went to jump off. It would have been about 30 knots I reckon,” he said.
If anything, Peter will be remembered for his spectacular crash that resulted in him flipping almost 180 degrees in the air as the wind caught hold of his hang glider design.
“In hindsight I should of moved my body weight a few inches forward to make it a bit more nose heavy.”
Peter plans to go back to the drawing board and reconstruct his aluminium and polystyrene craft for another tilt at the Birdman in 2008.
