Drinking damage

A PART answer to the Boozy Bogans (Cranbourne News, 9 September) is somewhat simple and the press of a button will do the trick.
It would take just one of our federal politicians to bring forth a private members bill to change the legislation as has been done for tobacco, (please contact your member).
Simply note the effect that the reduction of advertising had on reducing smoking and how lung cancer and other health concerns have been lessened.
Why, then, can’t we do much the same for alcohol.
Advertising is undertaken for one reason and one reason alone, to increase the consumption of alcohol.
Society is well aware of the ill effects of excessive drinking. Surely we do not need to encourage it.
As an example, simply observe the advertising on the apparel of our elite sports personalities. Surely this at least can be legislated against.
Yes, we can do something and we must to help stop the culture we are establishing, namely the consumption of alcohol as the norm at most social gatherings.
Let us act now before we do further damage to our society.
It can be done and we can at least legislate to reduce the advertising of alcohol especially.
Ron Roberts,
Cranbourne.
