Hub defects before council

By Cam Lucadou-Wells

TEETHING problems at the newly-opened $1.1 million Endeavour Hills Community Space have emerged.
Residents have reported varnish leeching from timber seats and lighting switched off outside the library and gym at night at the revamped suburb hub.
A resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said she felt unsafe walking from the library to the rear western car park at night due to the lack of lighting and no footpath linking a rear car park.
Casey Council chief executive Mike Tyler said the defects had been referred to contractors for rectification under a 12-month “defects liability” clause.
“It is common for minor defects or issues to arise shortly after the completion of any major construction, which is why (the) council includes a 12-month defects liability period within its contracts.”
Mr Tyler said the lights were operational, but the contractor had “set the clock incorrectly”.
“This was adjusted earlier this week and the lights now operate from 8pm to 6am daily.”
He said the stains due to the “natural leeching process” from the timbers would be cleaned “once leeching has ceased”.
The western car park would be linked by a footpath under a separate project partnered with Endeavour Hills shopping centre owners Markis Group, Mr Tyler said.
“Two other footpath connections have already been delivered just prior to the Town Square; one connecting the southern car park to the residential area to the east, and one providing safe travel from Matthew Flinders Avenue.”
The project has also included a kiosk and stage area.
Four Oaks ward councillor Rafal Kaplon said the project was complex and had many stages to come.
“Council’s consultation process with the community received immense support from residents for the project and having spoken to a few residents the feedback has been positive.”
