MP recovering after surgery

By Callan Date
LOCAL MP Judith Graley is undergoing treatment for breast cancer.
The Narre Warren South MP had a successful operation on Monday and is now recovering at her home.
A statement was issued on behalf of Ms Graley, 51, yesterday (Wednesday) saying the cancer was diagnosed early.
“While naturally shocked by the news of her condition, Judith has approached this challenge with determination and a bright and positive outlook,” the statement read.
“She has received excellent medical care and she is supported in her recuperation by her loving family and friends.”
Ms Graley was elected at the November 2006 state election.
The former school teacher is married with two daughters and a son.
“Judith recognises that she is not alone in facing this challenge – around 3000 women in Victoria, and one in every 11 women nationwide, are diagnosed with breast cancer every year,” the statement said.
Ms Graley said she encouraged all women to undergo regular checks for cancers.
“Women should routinely check their breasts for any changes, such as lumps, which can be early warning signs,” the statement said. “While our treatments continue to improve, early detection remains absolutely crucial.
“Judith is disappointed that her illness will mean a period of absence from her work in Narre Warren South at this time of great energy and excitement in the electorate.
“Judith is rapt with the Brumby Government’s investment in important local roads, schools and youth services.
“She is already looking forward to returning to work and carrying on the important work that she has begun in the electorate.”
The Narre Warren South electorate office will remain open while Ms Graley is recovering.
