COMMUNITY doyen Ross Miller was recognised as a Paul Harris Fellow at last week’s Rotary dinner.
The Rotary Club of Narre Warren presented the inaugural Narre Warren South P-12 principal with the Paul Harris medallion, pin and certificate on Wednesday night at the Fountain Gate Hotel.
A shocked Mr Miller, 66, said the award was unexpected.
“I was taken completely by surprise,” he said.
“I treasure the connection I have with Rotary. It’s a great honour to receive the award.”
Club president Ian Pickering said the award recognised the outstanding things people had done for the community.
Mr Miller has been a part of the Narre Warren and Berwick community for 30 years and recently decided to retire after spending a quarter of a century helping guide students and teachers in the local area.
Despite not being an official Rotarian, Mr Miller said that over the years he had continually helped the Rotary Club of Narre Warren.
“I’ve known many of these members for 25 years and even taught their children,” he said.
“I like the ideas and values of Rotary. They help others who are less fortunate than they are.”
Mr Miller said he shared a special bond with Paul Harris.
“I was very interested to learn that we both had a connection with Peru,” he said.
“I travelled around South America in 1970 and also went there last year with my wife.”
In retirement, Mr Miller plans to spend more time with his family, including his grandchildren, reignite his passion for the arts and continue his love for travel.
