Keep your pets safe

When there are storms near you, it is important to remember how to properly care for animals.

Loud noises associated with summer thunderstorms is a common phobia of animals, according to the RSPCA website, which can result in escape from properties and injury.

It is important not to punish pets for their stress and instead attempt to engage or distract animals, reassuring them that everything is okay.

The RSPCA added that animals may feel more at ease if they have access to a safe area such as under a bed or in a wardrobe.

Given the risk of escape, boundary fences and gates should be secured and it is also critical that pets are microchipped to give owners the best chance of reuniting with their pets.

If you know that your pet is extremely fearful of thunderstorms, the RSPCA said that you should consult your vet and it may be prescribed with medication or a planned approach to deal with the fear.
