LEARNER drivers in Casey are risking life and limb.
Casey TMU’s Senior Constable Allen Inderwisch says police have noticed an increased number of learner drivers driving without a qualified supervisor and without learner plates.
“This is causing police a great deal of concern,” Sen Con Inderwisch said.
“We need to get through to learner drivers that they are putting themselves and other drivers at risk by doing this.”
The warning comes as Dandenong police charged a 21-year-old learner driver from Lynbrook with over 15 driving offences after he was caught driving without supervision.
The charges followed a high speed chase through Cranbourne, Endeavour Hills and Dandenong.
Sen Con Inderwisch said that while police had noticed an increase across the City of Casey, Hampton Park and Hallam were the worst.
Learner drivers who are found driving without a supervisor face large fines and an appearance at the Magistrates Court which could lead to loss of licence.
Those who drive without learner plates face a fine.
Sen Con Inderwisch said that learner drivers driving unsupervised were not experienced enough or equipped to control a vehicle if they get into trouble.
“They could be injured or killed,” he said.
“Not to mention the risk to other drivers.”
He said police were encouraging parents to give their kids opportunities to drive in all weather and traffic conditions.
Police will take a hard-line approach to the problem.
“We are doing a lot more random vehicle and licence checks,” he said.
