Comets rue lost chances

MISSED opportunities again hurt the Casey Comets on Saturday as they went down to State League Two South East heavyweight Heatherton United 2-0 at Bosnia and Herzegovina Centre.
The 11th-placed Comets appeared to have a difficult task on paper against second-placed United, but they matched it with the home side for the better part of the 90 minutes.
United took a 1-0 lead into the break, but the Comets came out the hungrier side in the second half and had a swag of opportunities to tie the game.
The failed Comets could not convert and, when United found the net from a cracking free kick in the last quarter of an hour, the result was sealed.
Comets coach Tony Saunders rued his side’s wastefulness.
“I think if we’d played until 7pm that night we wouldn’t have scored,” he said.
“We made an error, we gave the ball away and they scored from it in our defensive third.
“We’re doing the right things, we’re just not able to finish it off. A win would help confidence and from there we could grow and grow.” Saunders picked out young gun Brendan Elmazovski as his side’s best player.
Berwick City went down 3-1 to Brandon Park at Jack Thomas Reserve in State League Three South East action on Saturday.
It was only Berwick’s third loss for the season, but it was enough to drop the side into second place on the ladder behind Southern Suburbs.
In Provisional League One South East, the two local teams had another mixed weekend, with a loss and a draw.
Endeavour United went down 4-2 to Mornington, while Doveton played out a scoreless draw with Warragul United.
This Saturday, Casey takes on the Eastern Lions at Comets Stadium, Berwick City hosts Southern Suburbs in a top-of-the-table clash at Jack Thomas Reserve, Endeavour United plays Warragul United at Reema Reserve and Doveton heads away to face Mooroolbark.
