SEVERAL intern doctors have recently kick started their careers at Casey Hospital, equipped with a stethoscope and thermometer.
Doctors Wee Jie Chee and Osama Elsewaisy are two of the new interns working out of the hospital.
Dr Chee told the News he had always been fascinated with medicine, which he said combined the sophistication of science and the warmth of human touch.
“My father, who was a general practitioner, was also a huge influence in choosing this career,” he said.
The 25-year-old is currently doing a general medicine rotation at the hospital after studying at the University of Melbourne for six years.
Dr Chee said his favourite aspects about the job included seeing improvement in a patient’s health, job stability and receiving a fairly good income.
Dr Elsewaisy, 24, is working in the emergency department.
“The emergency department is a great rotation to start on because there’s so much support – there are senior doctors around 24 hours a day so I never feel like I’m on my own,” he said.
“Emergency work is varied by nature so I’ve been doing everything from plastering fractures to stitching up cuts and treating people with general complaints like abdominal pain, cough and sore throat.”
Dr Elsewaisy plans to do some volunteer work as a doctor either in Australia or overseas in the future.
He said the best part about the job was the rewarding feeling of helping people through an uncomfortable time in their lives and feeling like he had made a difference.
“Medicine is all about teamwork so it’s great to work with a group of people who are all dedicated to the common cause of providing the best possible care to patients,” he said.
