A NARRE Warren man had his car impounded over the weekend after he was nabbed by police doing 137km/h in an 80km/h zone.
The 22-year-old was caught driving along the Princes Highway in Hallam as police patrolled Casey roads for one of the state’s biggest road policing operations during the Easter long weekend, Operation Aegis VII.
Senior Constable Allen Inderwisch from the Casey Traffic Management Unit (TMU) told the News there was no excuse for a driver doing 137km/h in an 80km/h area.
“It is just stupid behaviour,” he said.
Police from the Operational Response Unit and general duties officers joined Casey traffic police to saturate the streets in a bid to curb the alarmingly high road toll.
So far, there have been two road fatalities in Casey this year.
Sen Const Inderwisch said police caught seven drink drivers and detected 260 traffic offences including speeding, unlicensed drivers, unregistered cars and motorists using mobile phones while driving as part of the highly visible Operation Aegis VII.
Police did 1914 breath tests over the weekend, and also impounded a car in Narre Warren after catching the driver doing a burnout on Springfield Drive.
“We are happy we didn’t lose any lives on Casey roads over Easter, however, we are unhappy with the number of offences we detected, particularly the drink drivers,” he said.
“Police will continue with their enforcement efforts over the year so just because the Easter period is over, it does not mean we will be easing off,” Sen Const Inderwisch said.
