DESPITE not playing great soccer, Endeavour United coach Norm Maitland is still impressed that his side is winning.
The Provisional Two side beat Old Carey 2-0 at Carey Sports Complex on the weekend, even though Maitland admits the win was not his team’s best.
“There were two even teams on the park,” Maitland said. “We’re not playing as well as we can but we’re still winning games which is pleasing.”
After a scoreless first half, Endeavour United were put under the pump but quickly responded with a lucky goal that came after a goal keeper mistake.
Endeavour then began generating some pressure of their own that led to a well-worked goal down the left back side.
Endeavour will discover next week if they can still match it with the best when they come up against Provisional Two front runners Skye United.
In the other Provisional Two match, Berwick Kings were pummelled 4-2 to Old Brighton Grammarians at Dendy Park.
The Kings were never in the game as the Grammarians streaked to a three goal lead in the first half.
In the remaining Provisional One match Doveton was brought back down to earth after a 5-1 thumping at the hands of the Dandenong Sparrows at Fotheringham Reserve.
After losing only one game in the last four weeks, Doveton was quickly reminded of the class gap separating the top teams from the middle of the pack.
Berwick City continue to struggle in Division Two, with their 4-1 loss against Morwell becoming their third loss in a row.
It was a one man affair at Berwick’s Jack Thomas Reserve with Morwell show-stopper Frank Albanese belting home four goals to single-handedly ruin any chance of an upset.
The Casey Comets also had their toughest game of the year when they played the undefeated Division Two team, the Southern Stars.
The Comets went down to the clinical Stars 2-0 at Ross Reserve but the Comets are now focussed on next week’s cross-town rivalry match up against Berwick City.
